Ravens lay egg in Jacksonville, lose 12-7

The Ravens (4-2) had all the advantages that you could think about coming in to their Monday night game against the Jacksonville Jaguars (2-5), losing 12-7.

Did Joe Flacco play well in the loss? Absolutely not. Was it all his fault? Nope, I don’t think so at all.

Baltimore’s patchwork offensive line didn’t do a good job of protecting Flacco, forcing the fourth-year quarterback to scramble and misfire on multiple occasions.

Ravens stay in first place with 29-14 win over Houston

The Ravens (4-1) beat up the Houston Texans (3-3) in the first and fourth quarters en route to a 29-14 victory to keep them in first place in the AFC North.

Quarterback Joe Flacco passed for 305 yards, completing 20 of his 33 passes with an interception and a rushing touchdown. Flacco stood in the face of a fierce rush and played a solid game.

Ravens take sole possession of first place with win over Jets

This was one ugly game. The Ravens (3-1) beat the Jets (2-2) 34-17 in a key AFC matchup.

Joe Flacco wasn’t on point for most of the first game after the first quarter. He turned the ball over twice, including an interception returned for a touchdown.

The Ravens’ defense returned three Mark Sanchez turnovers, two fumbles and an interception, in to touchdowns to aid in the victory.

Ravens return to form, beat Rams 37-7

What a switch this was from last Sunday against the Titans, huh? The Baltimore Ravens (2-1) started fast and poured it on the overwhelmed Rams (0-3) in their 37-7 win Sunday. Torrey Smith flashed his ability with five catches for 152 yards, including three first quarter touchdowns. Smith’s first career catch, a 74-yard bomb, was also his first career touchdown.

Quarterback Joe Flacco threw the ball 48 times, completing 27 of them, for 389 yards and 103.6 quarterback rating. Flacco played a standout game finding seven different receivers for completions and targeting nine different receivers. It was a completely different Flacco than the guy that played against the Titans.

Ravens go through the motions in loss to Tennessee

The Ravens (1-1) appeared to be in a malaise fron the opening snap Sunday afternoon against the Tennessee Titans (1-1) as they fell 26-13. Baltimore’s offensive line got handled all day by the Tennessee front four which made Joe Flacco not look very good the entire game.

Flacco struggled making his reads and threw his first two interceptions of the season. Baltimore’s passing offense never really got on track except for their lone touchdown drive.

Ravens crush Steelers 35-7 in season opener

The Ravens (1-0) beat the Pittsburgh Steelers (0-1) in every facet of the game en route to a 35-7 victory. Baltimore’s defense forced seven turnovers, including three interceptions of Ben Roethlisberger. All the credit shouldn’t go to the defense, though.

Joe Flacco and the offense raced out to a 7-0 lead on three plays on the first drive of the game. Ray Rice started things off with a 36-yard run through the Steelers’ defense. Two plays later, Flacco hit Anquan Boldin with a 27-yard pass for a touchdown.

Steelers Week Part 1

I have this game as 17-14. The games between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens are always close and I don’t see this week being any different.

The Ravens have revamped their team with 20 new players while the Steelers still have mostly the same crew, with a few exceptions, back from their Super Bowl run last season.

So which is more problematic?

Dress rehearsal doesn’t go as planned, but still results in 34-31 win

There were several things to like and dislike in the Ravens’ 34-31 win against the Redskins Thursday night.

Yes, the Ravens are now 2-1 in the preseason and the defense is blitzing regularly. However, the secondary looks more like it did last season, than a revamped unit and quarterback Joe Flacco still makes some head-scratching throws.

Aside from the defense blitzing, the defensive line has been getting consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks. In particular, fifth-round pick Pernell McPhee is having a strong preseason. McPhee finally recorded a sack after having a sack and a fumble overturned in the previous two preseason games.

The offense looks much more explosive with Lee Evans as well. Evans had a 35-yard touchdown reception Thursday night on a go route. That has been a dimension the Ravens’ offense had been lacking for the last several seasons.

Now the bad. Second-round pick Torrey Smith, a very fast receiver, has had issues catching the ball. Smith can catch the ball, but hasn’t shown it so far this preseason. Smith has been outshined by his former Maryland teammate, and current Ravens teammate, LaQuan Williams.

The secondary struggled against Rex Grossman and John Beck. That’s not a good sign for a team that has to play the arch-rival Steelers on opening day.

Breaking down the Ravens schedule

Last night, I posted the released regular season schedule of the Baltimore Ravens. Now that I have some time, I’ll break it down as I see it.

The biggest game of the year is Week 1 against arch-rival and division rival Pittsburgh Steelers. Unless Ben Roethlisberger gets in trouble this offseason, which I see as unlikely because of his upcoming marriage, quarterback Joe Flacco will have a chance to exorcise his demons. If the Ravens can get past the Steelers unscathed, there’s a good chance they start 3-0.

After Week 3 against the Rams, the Ravens come home to face the Jets. The Jets will be a tough, physical game, but the Ravens have a bye the next week and were able to beat the Jets to open the 2010 season.

There will be a stumble here and there, but depending on how free agency and the draft shake out, the Ravens appear to be a strong team.

One of the highlights, in my mind, is the team is on in prime time five times, including the Ravens’ first ever Thanksgiving game.

I’m looking forward to the season and getting those Pittsburgh games out of the way before playing the rest of the division. As always, the NFL season should be fun.

Ravens throw, fumble away lead and fall to Steelers

After a promising start, the Ravens (13-5) had a meltdown leading to a 31-24 loss to the arch rival Pittsburgh Steelers (13-4). Baltimore built a 21-7 halftime lead off of two Pittsburgh turnovers and an offense that did just enough.

Sure the Pittsburgh defense is a standout defense, but they should be able to move the ball better than they did in the second half. Part of the issue on offense for Baltimore was their turnovers. The Ravens turned the ball over in the third quarter three times. One of those turnovers was running back Ray Rice’s first fumble of the season.

Rice’s fumble shifted momentum for the entire game. Pittsburgh capitalized on the fumble for a touchdown making the score 21-14.
