What to watch for in Ravens v. Panthers

The Baltimore Ravens finally get back on the field in a competitive situation for the first time since their loss to the Indianapolis Colts in the Divisional Round of the playoffs last season. Although it doesn’t really count, the first preseason game signals excitement for the fan base and gives the fans a quick look at the team that may take the field when the season opens Sept. 13 at the Jets.

Of interest, obviously, is how quarterback Joe Flacco works with his new receivers, Anquan Boldin and Donte’ Stallworth. Boldin was acquired in a trade and has been working hard this offseason, and during training camp, to develop chemistry with Flacco. Stallworth, signed as a free agent, has a lot to prove this year after being suspended for all of last year. Stallworth was signed to be a threat to stretch the field and to complement Boldin and Derrick Mason.

Mason signs with Ravens

Wide receiver Derrick Mason has returned to Baltimore. This time it’s for two more years.

Mason was leaning toward retirement at the end of the 2009 season, but had stated he would come back if he got a two-year contract. He didn’t really test the free agent market and the Ravens gave him the length on a deal that he wanted.

Ravens trade for Boldin, lose Bannan

The Baltimore Ravens struck first in their division when the NFL’s free agency period opened on Friday. Baltimore’s front office traded for Anquan Boldin and a fifth-round pick from the Arizona Cardinals for a third- and fourth-round pick in the NFL Draft. Not a bad deal, but I’m not crazy about it.

Boldin fills a hole on the Ravens roster, but he’s not the speedy receiver that the Ravens need. He’s big, fast and physical, but I don’t think he can blow by cornerbacks. I like his physical style of play, but it sometimes costs him some games every season. Boldin hasn’t played a full season since his rookie year in 2003.

Ravens grab Stallworth

The Baltimore Ravens got their offseason started early by getting a free agent receiver with baggage. Donte’ Stallworth agreed to a contract with Baltimore after the Cleveland Browns terminated his contract. Stallworth sat out the entire 2009 season after being suspended by the NFL for his DUI and manslaughter guilty plea.

I thought this move might occur after news broke shortly before the Super Bowl that Stallworth would be a candidate to sign with the Ravens. Stallworth addresses a gaping hole in the Ravens offense. I expect him to be the No. 1 receiver in Baltimore’s offense. He will compliment whatever receiver is on the other side, but I think Baltimore’s preference is to re-sign Derrick Mason.
