Gearing up for Houston

After a heartbreaker against the Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday night, the Baltimore Ravens have another chance to take the field in primetime. This time, Monday night against the struggling Houston Texans.

The Ravens are now the sixth seed and need to win to make a playoff push. On the other side of the ball, Houston needs to win to stay in the AFC South division race.

However, this game heavily favors the Ravens. Houston’s defense, their pass defense in particular, has been very bad all season long. After the questionable play calls during last Sunday’s game, expect offensive coordinator Cam Cameron to open the offense and let Joe Flacco throw the ball around to Anquan Boldin, Derrick Mason, T.J, Houshmandzadeh and Donte’ Stallworth. Additionally, Ray Rice should have a big day if Baltimore is playing with a lead.

Polamalu’s big play completes Baltimore’s fourth quarter collapse

Sunday night’s game between the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers was a typical defensive battle. The Ravens, however, were able to strike first. The Steelers, and Troy Polamalu, got the last laugh.

In the fourth quarter with the Ravens up 10-6, offensive coordinator Cam Cameron called for a pass on second-and-five. Polamalu, blitzing from the end, had a clear path to Baltimore quarterback Joe Flacco and sacked him while forcing a fumble. The fumble was bad enough, but linebacker LaMarr Woodley recovered the ball at the Baltimore 10 yard line.

After the recovery Ben Roethlisberger completed a pass to Isaac Redman for Pittsburgh’s only touchdown of the game. The touchdown gave Pittsburgh a 13-10 lead and, eventually, the win.

Previewing Dolphins-Ravens

Finally the bye week for the Baltimore Ravens is over. They get back in action this Sunday to take on the Miami Dolphins.

It’s an interesting matchup because Miami has all four of their wins on the road and the Ravens are undefeated at home. Baltimore is rested and healthy while Miami just came off of a physical game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Fins have had trouble getting the ball in to the end zone, but Dan Carpenter has been solid, kicking 10 field goals the last two weeks.

Ravens blow lead; fall to Patriots in OT

For three quarters Sunday afternoon, the Baltimore Ravens were the better team in their game against the New England Patriots. They got out to a 20-10 lead by being aggressive and taking the game to the Patriots. However, when the game went to the fourth quarter, momentum shifted towards the Patriots.

Baltimore went in to a shell on offense using short passes and runs up the middle. Early on, the coaching staff was letting Joe Flacco throw the ball downfield to his receivers. It appeared that New England had no answer for Anquan Boldin, Derrick Mason, T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Todd Heap, but the play calls got very conservative as if the Ravens were playing not to lose as opposed to playing to win.

Previewing Ravens v Broncos

The Baltimore Ravens will host their second game of the season Sunday afternoon. Their opponent will be the Denver Broncos. Each team is coming off of a big win on the road.

Denver was able to beat Tennessee in comeback fashion last Sunday. Kyle Orton threw the ball 50 times and vaulted himself to the top of the NFL in passing yards. However, he now faces the NFL’s top-rated pass defense.

Baltimore has held their opponents to just 119.0 yards per game through the air. The Ravens haven’t faced the best air attacks in the NFL, but the talent that the New York Jets and Cincinnati Bengals have is impressive and the Ravens were able to keep those teams out of the end zone. Baltimore has allowed just one touchdown by air, and that was a one yard strike to Benjamin Watson from Seneca Wallace in Baltimore’s home opener in Week 3.

Flacco leads Ravens past Steelers 17-14

If there’s one thing that Baltimore Ravens fans have learned over the years, it’s that the Ravens know how to win ugly. Sunday, the Ravens did just that, defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers 17-14 at Heinz Field.

Quarterback Joe Flacco exorcised some demons when he threw a game-winning touchdown to T.J. Houshmandzadeh with 32 seconds left in the game. It was Flacco’s first career win at Heinz Field and Baltimore’s first since 2006.

The game was very tight all day long. Baltimore and Pittsburgh traded touchdowns in the first half, but the Ravens kicked a field goal at the end of the first half to give them a 10-7 lead over their archrivals. After a couple mistakes by the offense, Steelers’ kicker Jeff Reed missed two field goals, one to the right and one to the left.

Offense covers for defense in Ravens win

Baltimore fans expected more from the home team in their home opener, but the Baltimore Ravens pulled it out over the Cleveland Browns Sunday afternoon.

On paper, this game was a total mismatch. Cleveland was without their top running back (Jerome Harrison) and their starting quarterback (Jake Delhomme), but they challenged the Ravens until the fourth quarter.

Instead of Harrison, the Browns used Peyton Hillis who was acquired from the Denver Broncos in the Brady Quinn trade. Hillis ran right through the Ravens defense and gained 144 yards on 22 carries. It was a bit surprising that the Ravens gave up so many yards, but Cleveland’s offensive line in the strength of their team and they did their job handling the Ravens’ defensive linemen.

Ravens silence the Jets

It wasn’t a pretty game, but the Baltimore Ravens stuck it to the New York Jets with a 10-9 victory Monday night. Baltimore beat the Jets at their own game: smash mouth football.

The Ravens held on to the ball for more than 38 minutes and the defense hit the Jets offense. One particular hit that stood was in the fourth quarter when Ray Lewis knocked down Dustin Keller on a pass over the middle. Baltimore’s defense showed they were tougher than the self-proclaimed “Miami Heat of football.”
