ACC expands, gets stronger in football, basketball

There has been tons of news about conference realignment and thus, a different landscape in college sports. Maryland’s conference, the Atlantic Coast Conference, fired the first shot. Syracuse and Pittsburgh applied for, and were granted, admission in to the conference. They will become members 13 and 14.

The benefit for the ACC is two-fold. First, there are more northern schools to join Maryland and Boston College. Hopefully, and I know this frustrates a lot of Maryland fans, the balance of power will shift out of North Carolina. Secondly, ACC basketball, which has become arguably mediocre in recent years, will become the class of the NCAA again.

Terps tagged with their first loss 37-31

The game against the West Virginia Mountaineers (3-0, 0-0 Big East) was a disappointment in the fact that it was a loss. Maryland (1-1, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) tried to dig themselves out of a 27-10 halftime hole, but were unable to do so.

They should have won this game, but quarterback Danny O’Brien threw three interceptions and the defense had trouble stopping the Mountaineers’ offensive attack.

Ferrara’s kick, Chism’s interception help Terps beat Miami 32-24

There was a questionable penalty call, and a few non-calls, but the Maryland Terrapins (1-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) pulled out a 32-24 victory over the Miami (FL) Hurricanes (0-1, 0-1).

Cornerback Cameron Chism’s late pick six of Miami quarterback Stephen Morris provided the margin for victory for Maryland, but it was kicker Nick Ferrara’s clutch 32-yard field goal with a little more than a minute to go in the game.

Maryland rolls East Carolina in Friedgen’s finale

Maryland Terrapins head coach Ralph Friedgen ended his 10-year run in style as his team blasted the East Carolina Pirates (6-7) 51-20 in the Military Bowl presented by Northrup Grumman.

The Terps (9-4) started slow scoring just a touchdown in the first quarter. That touchdown, however, was a bomb from freshman quarterback Danny O’Brien threw a perfect strike to receiver Kevin Dorsey for 45 yards. The extra point attempt failed.

By halftime, Maryland was up 16-3 after the teams traded field goals and running back D.J. Adams scored his first touchdown of the day.

Maryland fires Friedgen so who’s next?

New University of Maryland Athletic Director Kevin Anderson held a press conference Monday afternoon to announce that the university will no longer have Ralph Friedgen as head coach. The change will take place after the Terps play in the Military Bowl on Dec. 29.

Friedgen kept his job after a disastrous season in 2009, and bounced back with an eight win season in 2010. However, offensive coordinator and coach-in-waiting James Franklin left to take the head coach position at Vanderbilt University. As soon as Franklin left the writing was on the wall for Friedgen.

It appeared, and then later confirmed, Maryland had no interest in renewing the contract of their coach, who will complete his 10th season and Anderson didn’t want a lame duck coach. The Terps will now move on from a loyal alum. The question is who will coach Maryland next season and beyond?

Seminoles drop Terps from ACC contention 30-16

In one of the biggest games in years for the Maryland Terrapins (7-4, 4-3 Atlantic Coast Conference), they came up short against long time rival Florida State Seminoles (8-3, 6-2).

If Maryland won they would have had a chance to play for the ACC title, but that isn’t a possibility now. With the 30-16 loss to Florida State, Maryland will have a shot to upend the NC State Wolfpack next week to knock them out of the ACC title game.

Terps get one step closer to ACC title game with 42-23 win over Virginia

The Maryland Terrapins (7-3, 4-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) overcame an obstacle that has plagued them in the past. Maryland went to Charlottesville, VA and beat the struggling Virginia Cavaliers (4-6, 1-5) 42-23.

Maryland quarterback Danny O’Brien was very good in his latest start completing 17 of his 28 pass attempts. Those 17 completions led to 289 yards and two touchdowns. The two touchdowns were two yard passes that went to wide receiver Torrey Smith and running back Da’Rel Scott.

Terps blow lead, lose to Miami 26-20

The Maryland Terrapins (6-3, 3-2 ACC) played one of their best games of the season Saturday afternoon against the Miami (FL) Hurricames (6-3, 4-2).

Freshman quarterback Danny O’Brien was pretty good in his latest start. O’Brien threw for 134 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

The defense played well, picking off Miami quarterback Stephen Moore twice, including one for a touchdown.

The most disappointing part of this game was in the final three minutes. Coach Ralph Friedgen called two timeouts when Miami didn’t have any, allowing Moore to throw for the game-winning touchdown.

This was a bad loss, but Maryland is still in the hunt for the ACC title.

Next week, the Terps will head to Virginia to play the Cavaliers.

Terps roll Wake Forest 62-14

The Maryland Terrapins (6-2, 3-1 ACC) came out firing Saturday afternoon against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. It was a great homecoming game for the Terps that saw eight different players get in the end zone, leading them to their 62-14 win.

It was a dominant performance by a Maryland team that’s now bowl eligible. That’s quite an accomplishment for the Terps who won just two games last season.

Terps squeak by Eagles to move to 5-2

The Maryland Terrapins over the last two seasons have struggled on the road, last winning at Clemson in Sept. 2008. That drought ended Saturday afternoon as the Terps (5-2, 2-1 ACC) defeated the Boston College Eagles (2-5, 0-4) 24-21.

Maryland had some trouble running the ball, gaining just 43 yards on the ground, but quarterback Danny O’Brien was able to pass for three touchdowns.
