The Maryland Terrapins (1-1, 0-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) were impressive in a season-opening loss to Kentucky Friday night. Monday evening had the young Terps matched up against Morehead State (1-1, 0-0 Ohio Valley Conference) and they won 67-45.
Maryland came out strong, got an early lead behind more strong play from sophomore center Alex Len and never looked back. The Terps showed how athletic and tenacious they can be when everything flows right. In particular, Xavier transfer Dez Wells looks to be the best player on the team not named Len.
Perhaps the most impressive thing about Maryland is they have 10 players that can play at any time. Sometimes coach Mark Turgeon can make wholesale changes, as he did several times Monday night, or he can just take out a couple players at a time.
An example of that depth against the Eagles came at point guard. Junior guard Pe’Shon Howard made several outstanding passes in the Terps’ win, but he wasn’t the only point guard to do so. Freshman Seth Allen also had a few nice passes that led to Maryland points.
Next up for Maryland is Long Island University – Brooklyn on Friday night.
