So there’s this rumor about the Orioles and Zack Greinke. It’s obvious the Birds need to upgrade their rotation after three-fifths of it was demoted to Triple-A Norfolk within the past week and left-hander Zach Britton apparently not ready to be with the big club.
The Brewers appear to be falling out of the race for their division with the Pirates and Reds winning. That may lead to Milwaukee becoming a seller at the trade deadline to replenish their farm system.
Baltimore seems like a perfect match for the Brewers. Although there aren’t a ton of high-upside prospects, the Orioles can offer a major league-ready starter and a few other minor leaguers as well as salary relief for Greinke.
The caveat, of course, is if the Orioles can agree to an extension with the 28-year-old starter.
It’s possible and the Orioles should do it. The guy I would trade as the centerpiece of the deal is left-hander Brian Matusz. He’s been a bit of a disappointment the last couple of seasons and can’t seem to get himself straight in the American League East.
Matusz still has potential, but it doesn’t look like he’ll reach it in Baltimore. A change of scenery to Milwaukee could do him some good.
Trading him will help the Orioles in the process in their pursuit of a former Cy Young winner in Greinke.
