Inopportune turnovers, bad special teams, a struggling defense and an offense that wasn’t quite good enough to get in the end zone. That’s been the story all season and it was the story in the Maryland Terrapins’ (2-9, 1-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) 31-10 loss to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (6-5, 5-3).
Quarterback C.J. Brown, starting in place of Danny O’Brien who is out for the season with a broken arm, played well as he racked up 296 yards of offense by himself. The problems came when the Terps got in the red zone.
Maryland had a Davin Meggett touchdown taken away because of a holding call. They also blew an opportunity to score early in the game when they were whistled for a false start on a fourth-and-2. Both times, Nick Ferrara missed a field goal.
The Terps got their share of breaks, too. There was an overturned lost fumble, a long pass that was wiped away and a blocked punt. Maryland couldn’t capitalize on any of these chances.
The defense gave up 514 yards to the Demon Deacons. Wake Forest quarterback Tanner Price passed for 320 yards and running back Brandon Pendergrass produced another 125 yards on the ground.
Maryland ends their season next week at N.C. State. This may be another 2-10 campaign, the second one in three years. Better times are ahead.
