Danny O’Brien and the Maryland Terrapins (2-8, 1-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) got the ball from the opening kickoff in Saturday night’s game against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (7-3). It didn’t seem to matter, though. Maryland lost their sixth consecutive game 45-21.
The Terps offense didn’t get much going until the second quarter and fell behind early.
Notre Dame, led by quarterback Tommy Rees and running back Jonas Gray, scored on their initial drive to put Maryland in an early hole. It didn’t stop there for the Irish.
Gray and fellow running back Cierre Wood made the Terps’ defense look bad all night. Maryland hasn’t been great stopping the run and that didn’t change Saturday night.
Maryland’s pass defense also had trouble stopping Rees’ receivers. Michael Floyd, the Irish’s stud receiver, got in the end zone and ran past the Maryland secondary.
Once Notre Dame got an early lead, the Terps’ offense couldn’t compete. O’Brien led a few impressive drives, but threw a pick-six to put the team in a deeper hole. After O’Brien went out with an injury, C.J. Brown took over at quarterback.
Just an ugly night all around for Maryland. They will play Wake Forest next Saturday.
