It started out promising for the Maryland Terrapins (2-7, 1-5 Atlantic Coast Conference), but didn’t end that way Saturday afternoon. The University of Virginia (6-3, 3-2) ran through the Terps en route to a 31-13 victory in Maryland’s last home game of the season.
With the loss to Virginia, the Terrapins aren’t bowl eligible because they lost their seventh game of the season.
Quarterback Danny O’Brien got the starting nod over C.J. Brown. He played fairly well. O’Brien’s receivers didn’t do him any favors by dropping quite a few passes, including a drop in the first quarter by Quintin McCree. O’Brien ended with two interceptions and no touchdowns.
Brown did come in to spark the offense. He threw a touchdown to tight end Devonte Campbell in the second quarter. Brown also threw on interception and gained 24 yards on two carries.
The offense wasn’t the only issue in the game, though. On the opening kickoff, Virginia returned it to Maryland’s 47-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage for the Cavaliers, Perry Jones ran the ball for a touchdown.
Jones gained 139 yards on the ground. That was the majority of the 220 rushing yards that Virginia gained against Maryland. The Terrapins have had trouble all season stopping the run and this game wasn’t any different.
Virginia finished with 527 yards gained. Maryland ended the game with just 353 yards of offense.
The Terps will be in the national spotlight next week when they play Notre Dame at Fedex Field in Landover, Md.
