The Maryland Terrapins (2-4, 1-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) led for the most of the game, but the No. 8 Clemson Tigers (7-0, 4-0) prevailed with a 56-45 win.
Maryland jumped out to a 28-17 halftime lead on the strength of a couple turnovers from Clemson, including a pick-six by Cameron Chism.
The Terps also had a new-look offense which was being led by sophomore C.J. Brown who was starting in place of Danny O’Brien.
Brown showed versatility with 22 carries for 162 yards and a touchdown, while also throwing for 177 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Brown relied on tight end Matt Furstenburg who caught five balls for 104 yards and two touchdowns. The quarterback hit eight other receivers against a generally stout Clemson defense.
Even with a balanced offense, they had 291 rushing yards and 177 passing yards, Maryland’s defense was the problem in Saturday night’s game. The Terps’ defense hasn’t been very good all season.
Clemson was able to erase a 35-17 third quarter lead, on the strength of their running and return games. The star of the game for the Tigers was wide receiver Sammy Watkins. Watkins returned a kickoff and caught eight balls for 105 yards and two touchdowns.
Maryland will now play Florida State next weekend.
