Another big game and the Maryland Terrapins (2-3, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) came up short. This time, it was against the No. 13 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (6-0, 3-0).
The Terps, playing their first road game of the 2011 season, got off to a slow start. It wasn’t one of Danny O’Brien’s better days as a starting quarterback. O’Brien was just 1-for-6 for 17 yards and one interception. Not all of his incompletions were his fault because the receivers did drop some balls, but O’Brien’s interception was terrible. He was pulled from the game following that pass.
Backup C.J. Brown took over for O’Brien and seemed to spark the offense a little bit. There was still enough time left on the clock for Maryland to make a move. Brown broke free for a 77-yard run that put the Terps down 21-10 in the fourth quarter.
It could have easily been 21-17 after Brown’s run, but receiver Ronnie Tyler dropped a touchdown on a 4th-and-goal in the third quarter. The Terps ended up containing the Yellow Jackets to 21 points. Maryland made a game of it and cut the Georgia Tech lead to 21-16.
That was the final score and now the Terps may have a quarterback controversy on their hands. O’Brien is a very good quarterback, but his last few games haven’t been very good. He has four touchdowns and six interceptions on the season. Brown ran the ball well and sparked the offense, but didn’t do much in the passing game.
Maryland’s other issue has been a recurring one. In the first half, the defense struggled stopping the Georgia Tech triple-option attack. The second half, though, saw the Terps make adjustments and slow down the Yellow Jackets.
It doesn’t get any easier next week for the Terps. They face the Clemson Tigers who are a top 10 team next Saturday.
