After Wednesday night’s performance, there should be some more questions surrounding O’s right-hander Chris Tillman. The starter got rocked in his start against the Yankees, going just 1 2/3 innings and giving up six earned runs.
Tillman was fighting for the fifth starter’s spot in spring training, but because of injuries was made the No. 2 starter. In his first outing, although he had a no-hitter through six innings, it was an uneven outing because of control issues.
His last two outings, however, haven’t been very good at all. His velocity is down, but that doesn’t seem to concern him.
My biggest question is should Tillman remain on the roster? Well, right now, he almost has to. The best pitcher in Triple-A is probably Troy Patton, and he’s on the disabled list.
He may be sent to down to the minor leagues when Brian Matusz and Justin Duchscherer return, but one of the pitchers being sent down is sure to be Zach Britton.
Tillman has had success in Triple-A, pitching a no-hitter last season, but he may need to go down and get his mechanics straightened out.
For now, it looks like Tillman will stay in the rotation, but if his poor outings continue it won’t be for long.
