The Baltimore Ravens decided that Troy Smith will be the team’s third quarterback this season. Unless something unusual with the roster happens, Smith will be in the emergency quarterback as the Ravens traded away John Beck.
Beck was a second-round pick by the Miami Dolphins in 2007, Ravens offensive coordinator Cam Cameron’s only season as head coach. He will now be a Washington Redskin.
The soon-to-be 29-year-old was traded for cornerback Doug Dutch. Dutch fills a sudden need for Baltimore with the injuries to Domonique Foxworth, Fabian Washington and Lardarius Webb. Foxworth was placed on injured reserve Sunday after he tore his ACL Thursday night. Washington and Webb are recovering from ACL tears and at least one may not be ready for the season.
Dutch is a 24-year-old former undrafted rookie free-agent from Michigan. He spent the 2009 season on Washington’s practice squad.
Also of note, Jared Gaither made a surprise return to practice Monday morning.
