The Baltimore Ravens 2010 season is off to a rocky start, especially for fans who are hopeful of a deep playoff run this season.
Baltimore’s defensive backfield already had questionable depth with two cornerbacks, Fabian Washington and Lardarius Webb are recovering from ACL tears, and Ed Reed rehabilitating from a hip injury. Well, another injury struck Thursday when Domonique Foxworth tore his ACL.
Foxworth was going to be the number one cornerback this season, but that plan is now scrapped. There isn’t much on the free-agent market beyond Fred Smoot, an ex-Redskin and Viking, and Frank Walker. Baltimore hopes that Washington will be full recovered from his injury and be the starter on Foxworth’s side of the field.
On the roster, some of the Ravens’ other options are Walt Harris, Chris Carr and Cary Williams, who has a two-game suspension to begin the year. Carr played well in the absences of Webb and Washington last season so he is another option. Foxworth’s is the first major camp injury of the season.
Another injury that doesn’t seem to be anything to worry about. Offensive tackle Jared Gaither left Friday afternoon’s practice with an unknown injury, which was updated later by BaltimoreRavens.com as cramping. That is a relief because the Ravens aren’t especially deep at tackle. Oniel Cousins is the primary back up, along with Joe Reitz and 2010 sixth-round draft pick Ramon Harewood. However, Harewood is viewed as a project and should help Baltimore in the future.
It’s been an interesting start to the training camp, now the hope is it gets less interesting and hopefully the biggest story is the kicking competition between Shayne Graham and Billy Cundiff.
